Galvanised pipework… heard of it but don’t know what it is and why it’s dangerous? Galvanised pipes were used in Brisbane homes until around the 1950s/1960s. It was the choice of pipe some time ago!

However, since then, it’s been discovered that galvanised pipework can cause significant health impacts to you and your family. Even though Brisbane’s water is clean, the impacts of having galvanised pipework can be significant and detrimental to your health.

Galvanised pipework – what is it?

Galvanised pipes are steel pipes that were covered in Zinc in order to prevent rust and corrosion. However, it’s now been found that regardless of the Zinc used, galvanised pipes continue to corrode and rust overtime.

Why are Galvanised pipes so dangerous?

Overtime, the pipes begin to corrode and the Zinc on the pipes erodes. Unfortunately, it’s been found that this causes the dangerous toxin, Lead, which can have detrimental impacts on your health.

In case you don’t know, exposure to Lead, can lead to Lead Poisoning which can impact your brain and central nervous system. It can be particularly dangerous to young children and pregnant women, and has been linked to premature birth, developmental delays and cardiovascular concerns, and many more! What to know more? Read more about it on the World Health Organisation website.

If you want to check for lead in your water, you can get a DIY lead test kit online.
